Kai Luther, born in Berlin in 1978, lives and works in Potsdam an Werder|Havel, Germany.
Luther’s works convey a nativeness, a deep bond and intimacy – as it existed in the early days – between man and nature whose phenomena manifest the presence of the Gods. The forests, the mountains and the lakes seem to possess their own memory as they have survived many epochs. Only isolated traces of civilization bear testimony to man’s various interventions.
Luther’s paintings reflect a human longing: the desire to be close to nature and to share its secrets, just like an elf or a magician. It was the Austrian poet Nikolaus Lenau who, in the middle of the 19th century, expressed this desire in one of his Waldlieder [Songs of the Forest] with similar intensity as Kai Luther does in his new landscape paintings.
“Like Merlin
I wish to stroll through the forests;
Like Merlin, I wish to understand
What the strong winds blow
What the thunder rolls
And what the lightning wants,
What the trees speak
When they crack”
Aeneas Bastian, Prologue in KAI LUTHER.NØRDLAND, translated by Volker Raddatz, edited by Léonie Helling, 2013
